Philip Zelazo's research explores the development and neural basis of executive function. His influential work includes the "Cognitive Complexity & Control Theory" highlighting the role of complex rules formulated through self-directed speech. He also introduced the "Levels of Consciousness" concept, illustrating the progressive development of conscious control. Additionally, his "Iterative Reprocessing Model" suggests that reflection occurs through prefrontal cortex neural circuits. Professor Zelazo's contributions also include the "Hierarchical Competing Systems Model" and the distinction between cognitive and emotional aspects of executive function.
